LA County Board of Supervisors Ratifies Emergency Proclamation for Wildfire Recovery

la county

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has passed a motion to ratify a proclamation of local emergency in response to the devastating windstorms and wildfires that have impacted the region.

What You Need to Know

Key elements of the motion include:

  • Reaffirming these natural disasters as a local emergency ensures access to state and federal resources and helps streamline the County’s response and recovery efforts.
  • County departments are directed to implement all necessary assessment, assistance, and monitoring efforts. This includes recommendations to expedite permitting for rebuilding and recovery efforts.
  • The Chief Executive Office (CEO) will create a fund (to be managed by a third-party) to provide flexible relief to those most affected. The fund will explore partnerships with philanthropy and the private sector and use unspent County funds.
  • A directive to pursue legislation and funding opportunities to aid recovery efforts.

How It Impacts You

For commercial real estate professionals, the Board’s actions present critical opportunities and considerations.

Faster permitting can speed up rebuilding and repairs, minimizing downtime for businesses and tenants and restoring commercial spaces and infrastructure.

The relief fund could help with rebuilding and recovery.  We will follow its progress and explore ways for property managers and owners to access support.

The County’s effort to seek state and federal aid supports industry advocacy for recovery funding. Our coalition will stay updated and advocate for our industry’s needs.

Looking Forward

BOMA on the Frontline will continue to monitor these efforts and provide updates on how members can leverage available resources to support recovery and rebuilding.

Stay tuned for more information and opportunities to engage in advocacy to aid in this wildfire recovery.

For now, feel free to participate in BOMA/GLA’s Second Wave Support Donation Drive, running from January 20 to February 7, 2025, to provide continued assistance to fire victims by collecting essential supplies.

We encourage you to host a donation box in your building lobby to help meet ongoing needs.
