Back in Action: Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Bill Gains Momentum in Congress

The Setting Consumer Standards for Lithium-Ion Batteries Act (H.R. 973) is back for another legislative session.
It was just unanimously approved by the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
What You Need to Know
Although the legislation didn’t pass last year, it highlighted the growing bipartisan support for national safety standards to address the fire risks of lithium-ion batteries in e-bikes and scooters.Â
It was also the furthest advancement of a BOMA-supported bill, which means this year it has an even better chance at passing.  Â
The current bill, if passed, will:
- Require the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to establish safety standards within 180 days.Â
- Standardize safety regulations for manufacturers, users, and sellers of e-mobility devices.Â
- Reduce the risk of fires, fatalities, and property damage linked to defective or damaged batteries.Â
BOMA International plays a key role in advancing this legislation and will continue to advocate for its passage.
