BOMA/GLA Advocacy Team Meets with the Mayor of El Segundo

Law concept: Advocacy on computer keyboard background

The BOMA/GLA Advocacy team recently met with El Segundo Mayor Chris Pimentel, alongside key city officials, to discuss policy initiatives that could benefit the commercial real estate industry.

What You Need to Know

Some of our Government Affairs Committee leaders were able to join and sit down with the Mayor, City Manager, and Economic Development Director.

A major topic of discussion was the potential for self-certification for tenant improvement projects, a policy that has gained traction in cities like Austin, Los Angeles, and Santa Monica.

Chartered cities within the County have more flexibility in their building and safety codes. Opportunities to engage include the Land Use Entitlement update that is beginning in El Segundo now.

How It Impacts You

This meeting marks the beginning of an ongoing dialogue between BOMA/GLA and El Segundo leadership to explore ways to streamline the permitting process below the average 2-3 weeks where it currently sits.

While full self-certification is still in the works, El Segundo continues to lead the County for their business friendly practices and are open to modifying existing processes to expedite construction timelines.

Additionally, the conversation opened the door for future collaboration on attracting more tenants to the city, which could lead to increased investment opportunities for property owners and managers. We already know there is a great demand for high quality restaurants and other spaces.

BOMA/GLA will continue working with local officials to ensure that commercial real estate stakeholders have a voice in shaping these policies.
