BOMA/GLA Advocacy Staff Attends CCA’s Event with DA Nathan Hochman: Key Takeaways

District Attorney Nathan Hochman

BOMA/GLA Advocacy staff attended a Central City Association's (CCA) event featuring Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman. DA Hochman shared his strategic vision for enhancing public safety and addressing pressing issues in Los Angeles County.

What You Need to Know

DA Hochman emphasized a balanced approach to law enforcement, moving away from blanket policies and mass incarceration.

He advocates for tailored solutions that consider the nuances of each case, aiming for a "hard middle" ground that ensures justice and rehabilitation.

A cornerstone of his strategy is the establishment of six specialized task forces targeting critical areas:

  • Organized Retail Theft: Addressing the surge in coordinated retail crimes affecting businesses across the county.
  • Fentanyl Crisis: Combating the alarming rise in fentanyl-related incidents and fatalities.
  • Mental Health Crisis: Developing interventions for individuals whose criminal behaviors are linked to mental health issues.
  • Homelessness: Implementing strategies to reduce crime within the homeless population and provide support services.
  • Human Trafficking: Intensifying efforts to identify and prosecute traffickers while supporting victims.
  • Hate Crimes: Ensuring swift action against crimes motivated by bias and discrimination.

In line with his commitment to reform, DA Hochman highlighted the recent passage of Proposition 36, known as the "Homelessness, Drug Addiction, and Theft Reduction Act."

This legislation aims to address issues stemming from theft and drug-related offenses by allowing felony charges and increasing sentences for certain crimes.

This move signifies a shift from previous policies, such as those implemented by former DA George Gascón, which limited the filing of certain charges and sentencing enhancements.

How It Impacts You

For property owners and managers in Los Angeles County, these developments have significant implications:

Enhanced Property Protection: The Organized Retail Theft task force aims to reduce incidents of theft and vandalism, directly benefiting commercial property stakeholders.

Improved Safety Measures: Addressing the fentanyl and mental health crises can lead to safer environments for tenants and visitors, potentially reducing liability concerns.

Policy Revisions: The shift away from blanket policies means a more case-by-case evaluation of incidents, which could result in more appropriate responses to issues arising on your properties.

Community Impact: Addressing homelessness and human trafficking reflects a commitment to social responsibility, helping create safer, more stable neighborhoods that can enhance property values.
